Margaret HICKS Funeral Notice-Death Notice-Obituary
Family Announcement: "Died peacefully at Mary Doyle, Havelock North on February 15, 2021, after a stroke and heart complications. Adored wife of the late Ron. Loved mother and mother-in-law of Anne and Allan, Robin and Miranda, Kate and Ross, and Bronwyn and Vaughan. Special grandmother of Heath and Cathy, Andrea, Imogen, Sophie and Aaron, John and Oriana, Christopher, Grace and James. Great- Grandmother (GG) of Madeleine, Joshua, Cassandra and Alexis. Treasured sister of Dod and Ted (deceased) and sister-in-law to Shirley and Margaret. Beloved aunty to John, Anna, Jeff, Scott, Vivi, Steven, Marlene (and husband Ross) and Denise (and husband Wayne, deceased) and great-aunty to all of their children. Margaret was born in Auckland, May 12 to Herbert and Mary Norris, and lived in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) for her first five years until moving to Sydney. She met Ron while on a working holiday in New Zealand at Fox Glacier in 1951 and they married in Sydney at the end of that year. She was a proud Kangariwi! Margaret will always be remembered for her great zest for life, her fierce intelligence, sharp wit and love of literature. She was a fine seamstress and knitter, a keen gardener and bred and showed champion Springer Spaniels. She loved being with people, made friends of all ages and loved to gather friends and family around her table for lively conversation and homecooked meals. Her family was always her primary focus and yet she combined this with a successful career in teaching. In the 1960's she trained as a Home Science teacher and taught at the Napier Manual Training Centre, Wycliffe Intermediate and Hastings Girls High School. Branching into teaching subjects such as Geography and English, she found her fort? in working with students who found learning challenging. This led to her position at Havelock North High School as Head of Special Needs and she taught there until she retired, at one stage holding the position of acting Assistant Principal. In their 'retirement' she and Ron then established Kip McGrath centres in Napier and Taradale. When she finally did retire, she was a very active member of U3A and continued her love of learning. When Ron passed away two years ago, she moved into Mary Doyle Village in Havelock North. Despite her failing health, she enjoyed the activities and made many new friends with staff and residents. Margaret's family thank the staff at Bramley and Nimon for their love and care of our mother, especially in these last few months. Flowers can be sent to 19 Kirkpatrick Place, Havelock North 4130. Messages for the Hicks Family, C/o PO Box 439, Napier 4140."
"A celebration of her life will be held in the Beth Shan Chapel, 371 Gloucester Street, Taradale, Napier on Saturday February 20 at 9.00am"
